The expansion tank overflow hose is a flexible hose connecting the expansion tank (also known as the auxiliary tank or compensating tank) in a vehicle or industrial equipment cooling system to the outside environment. It directs and discharges excess coolant, which expands due to heat within the expansion tank, to a safe location. Typically, one end of this hose connects to the overflow port of the expansion tank, while the other end opens at the vehicle underbody or outside the equipment, allowing overflowing coolant to drain smoothly.

Over time, expansion tank overflow hoses may develop common faults primarily due to aging, corrosion, and improper installation, as detailed below:

• Hose Aging and Cracking: Rubber materials harden with age and become prone to cracking or brittleness under prolonged exposure to high temperatures and UV radiation. Long-term exposure to engine compartment heat often causes surface cracking or internal rubber layer degradation in overflow hoses. Aged hoses may develop cracks at connection points or bends, leading to coolant leakage.
• Coolant Leakage: If hose connections are loose or fittings are not tightened securely, coolant may leak from the hose interface with the expansion tank or clamp. Additionally, wear or corrosion perforation of the hose itself can cause coolant leakage. Leaks result in reduced coolant levels within the system, potentially causing engine overheating or abnormal elevation of the auxiliary reservoir water level.
• Hose Expansion or Softening: Inferior or aged hoses may expand and thicken due to heat, potentially forming localized bulges. Hose material can also soften and become sticky after chemical corrosion from coolant. Expanded or softened hoses may compromise sealing integrity, leading to coolant leakage or blockages in the system.
• Hose Collapse: In some cases, the steel reinforcement layer inside the overflow hose may fracture or fail, causing the hose to collapse under vacuum pressure and block the coolant passage. This obstructs coolant return from the overflow tank to the main system, hindering circulation and causing abnormal temperature spikes.
