A glow plug, also known as an engine preheat plug, is an electric heating element installed within the combustion chamber or intake manifold of a diesel engine, specifically designed for rapid and reliable starting in low-temperature environments. It heats up instantly before starting (reaching 850°C–1000°C within 2–5 seconds) to preheat the air or fuel entering the cylinder, ensuring that the fuel auto-ignites during the compression stroke. This significantly improves starting performance under cold conditions and reduces cold start wear.

Principle description

When the ECU detects that the coolant temperature is below the set threshold, it activates the preheating relay, allowing current to flow through the resistance wire coil or ceramic heating element inside the preheating plug, heating it up to over 850 ℃ within seconds; the atomized diesel sprayed by the injector quickly evaporates upon contact with the hot preheating plug and mixes with high-temperature air, achieving reliable compression ignition after compression. After successful engine ignition, the preheating plug continues to receive power for 180–600 seconds (post-heating stage) to reduce unburned hydrocarbon emissions.

Selection and installation tips

• Ensure matching of the required rated voltage, thread size, and heating power of the engine; using the wrong model may cause overheating or insufficient preheating;

• Ceramic electric heating plugs, due to their fast heating speed and long lifespan, have gradually replaced traditional metal electric heating plugs;

• The PSG type is suitable for engines meeting emission standards of National VI and above, capable of real-time monitoring of cylinder pressure for more precise combustion control.
